The Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C is the world’s most powerful diesel engine.
The Wärtsilä is manufactured in Finland and has enough power to light up an entire town, approximately 80080 KW of power. When you have engines that are bigger than houses you wonder how they work, but they work the same as the engine in your car. All the same parts are there, but much much bigger. When you see the tiny people walking next to the giant crankshaft it is like watching an episode of `Land of the giants`. Where the thrust washers are bigger than the people, rather than the ones you get in the car, which are smaller than your hand.
The largest Wärtsilä engines can have up to 14 cylinders, where the cylinder bore is just under 38”, and it takes 1,660 gallons of diesel to keep it working. Amazingly most of these engines can use any fuel from heavy fuel oil to marine diesel oil. The engines are connected directly to the propeller, so that it can produce reverse or forward thrust. Some of these propellers can be up to 34 feet in diameter.
The biggest engines have always been used in ships, transporting goods all over the world. One of these ships is the Norwegian ship the `Höegh Target` which can hold over 8500 cars, and has a deck space the size of 10 football pitches. If the cars on the ship were laid end to end it would cover 26 miles. The `Höegh Target` has just completed its maiden voyage from China to the UK. The new `Höegh Target` had its naming ceremony at Xiamen Shipbuilding industries in China in June.
So without these huge engines, nothing would get transported around the world. Aeroplanes can only hold a limited cargo.
So how big is the largest engine in the world? Well 89 feet long and 44 feet wide, 1,820 litres per cylinder, 10,920 to 25,480 litres total and a total of 107,389 horsepower. That is some engine.
